The Indiana Repertory Theatre: A Must See in Indy

One of the most beautiful buildings in Indianapolis is The Indiana Repertory Theatre. It’s a magical place that takes you on an adventure through time and around the world all in the same night.

The Indiana Repertory Theatre was founded in 1972. Since then it’s has become one of the leading regional theatres in the country. The building itself is gorgeous. You’ve heard the phrase “It’s all in the details” before right? That is how some describe the theatre. Everything inside is ornately carved, beautifully decorated and so wonderfully classic.

The shows themselves are amazing. The costumes, the actors, the stories are all top notch. One of my favorite parts of the plays are always the clever uses of space. I always smile with the scenery changes, it all happens before your eyes and is so well integrated in the show. I love the “special effects” – the lights, the props and really, the whole theatre comes together and these effects really are nothing short of special.

The IRT remains the largest fully professional resident not-for-profit theatre in the state, providing 110,000 live professional theatre experiences for its audience last season. The IRT is one of the most youth-oriented professional theatres in the country. A staff of more than 100 seasonal and year-round employees creates nine productions exclusively for Indiana audiences. Actors, directors, and designers are members of professional stage unions.

Enjoy a Show at The Indiana Repertory Theatre - DressAs someone who grew up going to Indiana schools, some of our best fieldtrips were to IRT. Today, plays are created specifically to introduce kids to theater. Early in the year I went to see a production of The Velveteen Rabbit (along with a big group of kiddos). The kids were so excited and you could see that the theatre was successful in making the space a special place for them.

The theatre works hard to make sure that the shows are available for everyone. Not only do the shows play multiple times to accommodate just about anyone’s schedule, but the tickets are affordable as well. The theatre also offers discounts to seniors, members of the military, and educators. Youth and college students can get tickets to a performance for only $20.

If you’re into volunteering, or need volunteering hours for school, the IRT is the place to be. Since they’re a not-for-profit theatre they depend on the help from volunteers.

Throughout the years, the IRT has been a staple in Indiana. It’s hard to find an Indiana local who hasn’t been to, or at least heard of all the wonderful programs and shows that the IRT offers.
